Has Sitting Become The New Smoking

Hello Downtown’s Healthcare friends & family!!

This is the first of many blogs that will be going out, and I thought that this topic would be profound for those of you that sit for a living. Is sitting the new smoking? According to Ann intern Med. 2015;162(2): 123-132 & CNN January 21, 2015, they certainly think so.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Research shows that the average American spends 9-10 hours of their day sitting.
  • Even for those with healthy lifestyles, evidence proves prolonged sitting actively promotes dozens of chronic diseases, including weight gain and type 2 diabetes.
  • Another alarming comparison to smoking is due to the fact that sedentary living because it increases the rate of lung cancer by over 50%. Who would have known that sitting is far more dangerous than second hand smoke? The most recent systematic review looked at 47 studies of sedentary behavior, and discovered that the time a person spends sitting each day produces detrimental effects that outweigh the benefits reaped from exercise.
  • Sitting was found to increase your risk of death from virtually all health problems, from type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, to cancer and all-cause mortality. For example, sitting for more than 8 hours a day was associated with a 90 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Even if you exercise, sitting eight hours a day significantly increases your risk of dying from any cause.

Our society has gone from being an industrial society to a technological one! If you are spending more than 8 hours a day sitting, it becomes important to prevent against the harmful results of sedentary living. And let’s face it, it’s not just in the office that most of us are sitting for long periods of time.

Take a minute to think about how long you sit while doing the following…

  • Commuting to work?
  • Watching TV?
  • Eating lunch and dinner?
  • Doing office work?
  • etc…

Because of this Downtown’s Healthcare has teamed up with Doctors for Health and Wellness, a non profit organization, to create corporate events that help local businesses with some of the common problems seen in office environments today.

One such corporate event that we offer is a lunch and learn on How to stay Fit while you sit. We also created a workstation ergonomic event where we come check all of the workstations and give tips on how to stay fit while you sit. One of our most popular events are called massage pamper events, where we bring massage therapists to your office and provide chair massages for you and your employees.
