What is a disc?

The vertebral disc is a spongy fusion located between the vertebrae (bones) of the spine.

The discs have three primary functions:

  1. They act as a shock absorber in the spine, positioned between each bony vertebrae.
  2. They act as tough ligaments that hold the vertebrae on the spine together.
  3. They are cartilaginous joints that allow for slight mobility in the spine.

Anatomy of a disc is as follows:

Discs are composed to two parts: A tough outer portion and a soft inner core, and the configuration has been likened to that of a jelly doughnut.

  • Annulus Fibrosus: The outer portion of the disc
  • Nucleus Pulposus: The inner core.

There are different types of disc problems that can occur.

  1. Disc bulge
  2. Annular tears
  3. Disc degeneration
  4. Herniated disc
    1. Protruded disc
    2. Extruded disc
    3. Sequestered disc
