Is sitting the new smoking?

There have been numerous studies on the negative impacts of sitting all day long. We at Regen Revolution are especially cognizant of this.  We have been helping people to regain their health from poor work station ergonomics for decades.

What does the research show:

Even if you exercise, sitting eight hours a day significantly increases your risk of dying from any cause!

  • Research shows that the average American spends 9-10 hours of their day sitting.
  • Evidence shows that prolonged sitting actively promotes dozens of chronic diseases, including overweight and type 2 diabetes, even if you’re very fit.
  • Sitting really is the new smoking and it increases your rate of lung cancer by over 50 percent. Who would have known that sitting is far more dangerous than second hand smoke?
  • The most recent systematic review2,3 looked at 47 studies of sedentary behavior, and discovered that the time a person spends sitting each day produces detrimental effects that outweigh the benefits reaped from exercise.
  • Sitting was found to increase your risk of death from virtually all health problems, from type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease to cancer and all-cause mortality. For example, sitting for more than eight hours a day was associated with a 90 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Other research4 has found that those who sit the most have a 112 percent increased Relative Risk of diabetes, and a 147 percent increased relative risk of cardiovascular events compared to those who sit the least.
  • In fact, chronic sitting has a mortality rate similar to smoking.5 And, the less you exercise, the more pronounced the detrimental effects of sitting.
  • Part one in a two-part series of articles7 published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) at the beginning of January also highlights the hazards of our modern sedentary lifestyle, suggesting that public policy needs to be reassessed and updated to focus on increasing movement during work hours.
  • The article summarizes the findings from the 2015 Inaugural Active Working Summit, where a number of health effects of sitting were reviewed, including cancer and mental health. For example, one study presented at the summit found that sitting increases:
    • Lung cancer by 54 percent
    • Uterine cancer by  66 percent, and
    • Colon cancer by 30 percent

Posture

Working in awkward postures and often awkward static postures puts extra strain on your body. Leaning forward puts even more strain on your body – especially your neck and back muscles. The further you stick your head out in front of your body, the more work your muscles have to do to support your head. In fact, as far as the muscles in your upper back and neck are concerned, “for every inch your head moves forwards, it effectively gains 10 pounds in weight”. Kapandji (Physiology of the Joints, Volume III, 2008. Risk factors that can cause ergonomic injuries include repeated exposure to:

Risk factors
  • Awkward or sustained postures,
  • excessive force or strain,
  • contact pressure, vibration, heat or cold.

Ergonomic injuries are given many names:

  • Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSIs)
  • Repetitive Motion Injuries (RMIs)
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)
  • Cumulative Trauma Injuries (CTIs).

No matter what name they are called, they can impact your activities at work and home. Thus it is imperative that we protect ourselves by incorporating measures into our activities that include working in as neutral postures as possible, taking mini-breaks, and using good lifting techniques to keep healthy and safe.

Signs and symptoms of ergonomic injuries include:
  • pain which may be dull and aching, sharp and stabbing or a burning sensation
  • tingling or numbness; swelling, inflammation, stiffness
  • muscle weakness or discomfort; extremities turning white or cold
  • muscle tightness, cramping or discomfort; clumsiness or loss of coordination
  • decreased range of motion; or discomfort when making certain movements

At Regen Revolution, we specialize in helping people who are experiencing the symptoms of sitting all day!  We take a team approach and not only assess your body, but what is causing the health problem to begin with.  Schedule an appointment today.

If you’re looking for an alternative to back surgery, what you really need to do is schedule an appointment with Regen Revolution multidisciplinary team. Regen Revolution has a range of procedures developed to help patients avoid spine surgery and the side effects of epidural steroid injections. We use a multidisciplinary approach to treat bulging or herniated discs, degenerative conditions in the spine, and other back and neck conditions that cause pain.
The origin of spine pain is often misidentified. On top of that the number one reason a person is prescribed an opioid is for back pain. Studies suggest that up to 150,000 people die every year in the USA because of dangerous opioid prescriptions. Our experience in treating the spine allows us to address as many factors as possible to gain insight into the true cause of the problem. We identify the most probable sources of pain and select the most appropriate treatment options available. Only then can the natural healing process be initiated using the safest, least invasive procedure possible.

Unlike the rest of your spine, your neck is very mobile and supports much of the weight of your head. Unfortunately, the structure and function of your neck also make it vulnerable to injury and pain. The pain management specialists at Regen Revolution in Denver, CO, take an interdisciplinary approach to alleviate neck pain and offer solutions that heal the root cause of your pain for long-term relief. To schedule an appointment to get relief from your neck pain, call the office or book online today.

How to make Working from Home with a Laptop 100% better!

Laptops make it possible to get work done from virtually anywhere, including your home. With everything you need in a single package, they’re tough to beat. However, as many people are discovering, there’s a big difference between making do for a few hours and using a laptop eight hours a day, for days or weeks at a time. If you’re looking for ways to make the situation a little more tolerable without laying out a lot of cash for a more permanent setup, I have some ideas for you. I’ve been working from home with a laptop as my primary machine for several decades, and these tips make the experience far more usable.

Get a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse

A few premium laptops have great keyboards and trackpads, but in most cases they are mediocre. Perfectly fine for firing off a few e-mails, but for putting in a solid day of typing and scrolling? Do yourself a favor and pick up a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Not only do they improve the experience of working with the laptop, having a wireless keyboard and mouse means you can position the laptop wherever you like. If you work with a lot of spreadsheets and numbers, a full-sized wireless keyboard with a numeric keypad will be much easier to use than the compact keyboard on a laptop.

Most decent computer mice these days say they will work on any source. Technically, this might be true. But I find the experience with any mouse improves when used with a decent mousepad. This will also help to protect the surface you’re working on.

Invest in a Laptop Stand

Working on a laptop at home for an extended period of time can be an ergonomic disaster. With most table and chair setups, you’ll end up staring down at the laptop display — a perfect recipe for a stiff neck. At Regen Revolution we have been helping people since 1997 with these repetitive injuries!

A laptop stand raises the laptop off the work surface, bringing its display closer to eye level. It may not sound like much, but this is a game-changer. Combined with a wireless keyboard and mouse, a laptop stand comes as close it gets to emulating an actual desktop PC experience. As an added bonus, the stand provides a handy “shelf” that you can tuck the keyboard under when not in use to reduce desktop/ tabletop clutter.

Laptop stands range from utilitarian to fancier options with machined aluminum or natural wood, and start at around $10. These can easily be found on Amazon!

Power User: External Monitor

It’s not a necessity, especially if your laptop has a fairly big display and you’re not working intently on tiny text, numbers or image pixels. However, if your job involves any of this sort of work, you’ll see a big benefit by investing in a desktop monitor and connecting the laptop to it. No more squinting, and your laptop display can become a second screen dedicated to e-mail or Twitter, making you even more productive. This also will help your neck! By having an External monitor your eyes will look more straight ahead instead of looking down. Literally a NECK saver!

A monitor is a little harder to tuck out of sight when not in use, but it can always do double duty with a video game console or video streamer.

Working in a Busy Home: Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Finally, if you’re working from home in a busy, noisy home — which is pretty much a given if kids are involved — a good set of noise-cancelling headphones is a must-have, whether you’re using a laptop or not. Headphones with active noise cancellation don’t even need to be used with music. Just put them on and turn on ANC to have yelling, barking, TV and other background noise eliminated so you can focus.
