Disc Problems

Vertebral Disc Definition

There are 24 movable bones of the spine. In between these bones resides a disc. A vertebral disc is the shock-absorbing structure found between the bones. The disc has an outer layer (Annulus Fibrosus) that surrounds the soft gel-like center (Nucleus Pulposus). These discs act as cushions between vertebrae. They help your back stay flexible, so you can bend and twist. The spinal canal, containing the spinal nerves, lies directly behind the disc and vertebral bodies.

Since 1997 Downtown’s Healthcare has been helping people who have back problems, and many times these patients are suffering from some form of disc problem. There are a handful of different disc problems. Below are the most common disc conditions we see.

• Degenerative Disc Disease
• Herniated Disc

Degenerative Disc Disease
With this type of condition, the intervertebral disc shrinks in height, and bulges out into the surrounding spinal canal.

The alignment of the spine may decompensate, the patient may adopt an unusual gait, and begin to tilt due to the collapsed disc.

Causes: There are several factors that can cause discs to degenerate, including age. Specific factors include:

  • Dehydration of the Disc: When we are born, the disc is about 80% water. As we age, the disc dries out and doesn’t absorb shock as well. Many times, this comes about from a lack of proper movement in the spine.
  • Activity: Daily activities and sports cause tears in the outer core of the disc. By age 60, most people have some degree of disc degeneration.
  • Trauma: Injuries cause swelling, soreness, and instability.

Herniated Disc
Unfortunately, many healthcare professionals are not up to date on the proper definitions of disc pathology. The proper definition of a herniated disc, is a condition in which the annulus fibrosus (outer portion) of the vertebral disc is torn, enabling the nucleus (inner portion) to herniate or extrude through the fibers.

How is a disc condition diagnosed?
A diagnosis is based on history, a physical examination, and diagnostic imaging.
